Kensington Pride mangoes imported from Australia are being sold at VND600,000 (US$22.75) per kilogram, 7.5 times the price of the same variety grown in Vietnam.
The owner of a store on Dinh Bo Linh Street in HCMC’s Binh Thanh Ward said a seven-kilogram box fetches VND3.7 million.
He said he only started importing the fruit in late October and only buys five boxes at a time due to high transportation and storage costs.
"Each fruit weighs about 500-600 grams and has firm flesh and great sweetness."
An employee at a store in Hanoi’s West Lake area, which sells the fruit at similar prices, said the mangoes must always be kept cold, which increases their price.
The specialty Australian mango, known for its bright gold flesh and mild fragrance, is mainly imported to Vietnam by air.
But it is also extensively grown in the Mekong Delta, especially in Tien Giang and Dong Thap provinces and Can Tho city, and sells for VND20,000-25,000 per kilogram at the farmgate and VND80,000 at stores.
In Australia, the fruit is grown mainly in regions with a dry climate like parts of Queensland and the Northern Territory and harvested in October-December.
At major Australian supermarkets such as Woolworths, Coles and Harris Farm they usually retail for $6.7-8 per kilogram.
According to the customs department, Vietnam imported fruits and vegetables worth over $100 million from Australia in the first nine months of this year, up 27% from a year ago.
Mangoes, cherries, grapes, mandarins, and oranges were among the top items, and most of them are expensive in Vietnam.
